They were easy to communicate with during the planning time and made all of the arrangements to pick us up from the airport and getting us on the ferry to the island . It was all very fluid and went smoothly. The cab driver was very pleasant and was a big fan of American
Music so we had plenty to talk about on the ride to Cala Mia.
First off , the staff. At Cala Mia they absolutely go above and beyond to make sure you feel like a VIP. The resort is small in size but big in heart and in a sense of family. There was no sense of hierarchy here, just family working together to help the guests live the best experience . We have to give a huge thank you to Joel who is truly dedicated to ensuring your experience is everything you dreamed. He is so helpful, kind and caring and wants to make sure you are comfortable. His recommendations were always on point , as if he knew exactly what we were thinking. We also want to make a shout out to Alex, the bartender, who is an outstanding mixologist . His tiki drinks were delicious and he’s so attentive to his guests that he remembered everyone’s drink orders. His relaxed demeanor was also refreshing considering we were on island time . David (owner) was fantastic; my boyfriend is an avid boater and fisherman and very interested in the resort’s power supply / boating fleet etc. and David took him on a private tour to see the fleet , which was really interesting and very nice of him. Rebecca was amazing and always so helpful in arranging times for our activities and making sure we knew when we needed to be somewhere. She also had a fantastic yoga session every morning that I regret not joining .
The food was awesome. We loved how the dinner changed every night and they would highlight the catch of the day. We were able to eat the fish we caught fishing; the fish tacos were amazing!! There is a lot to choose from for breakfast and lunch and everything is served special. The pizza oven shaped like a turtle at the beach bar was a nice touch! No buffets or hot plate food here! ( something we realized when we got back to Panama City was very important to us )
The activities were a blast. We did a full day of inshore fishing (shout out to Carlos and Christian for being AMAZING captain and first mate for our fishing boat. We caught a huge rooster fish In the first hour, which is what was #1 on our bucket list so the pressure was off for the rest of the day. We went on to catch a good variety of fish including a cubera snapper, many pacific jack, and a huge barracuda . A special thank you to Carlos and Christian because my boyfriend told them his goal that day was to catch a rooster and cubera snapper and we caught both! We were nearing the end of the day and the wind was about to pick up, but before we made a run for home they gave us one last shot at landing a cubera snapper . The mission was accomplished. For myself and my boyfriend this was an amazing experience to be able to say we had gotten every inshore fish on our list. Any fisherman knows that is not an easy feat. Bonus; they were great photographers and we ended up asking for their pictures because they were better than ours!
We also did the Islas Secas Snorkel trip which was spectacular with pan-tropical spotted dolphins jumping around the boat and frolicking near us the whole 45 minute trip to the islands. We also saw sea turtles, royal terns and diving brown boobies (Yes that’s the name of a seabird ). They took the time to try to find the whale shark spotted the day before but unfortunately we never laid eyes on the magnifying creature. What we did see under the pristine water surrounding Islas secas was an abundance of marine life and healthy reef . The spotted eagle ray was the highlight of the day for us as they are pretty elusive. Their flightiness makes them hard to catch on camera, but my boyfriend managed to get great footage!
The location and grounds are really gorgeous and remote. The bird diversity was unreal, I was in heaven hearing all the different bird calls and seeing all the hummingbirds and hermits. The grounds keeper was extremely friendly and loved swapping stories with us about the wildlife and fish we had spotted that day. The cabins are very nice and they feel quite private. We felt right at home with David’s three well behaved dogs, Amber, Winfield and Draco, laying at our feet at the beach bar, as we have Labradors of our own. Everything is also quite close so you can walk to the restaurant, the two beaches, the spa, the pool, etc, all very easily. We walked the trail to the overlook on the island and saw howler money’s right off the trail. We used the paddle boards on the last day and saw a baby (tiny) hammerhead shark battling two frigate birds for the fish he had caught ! Needless to say they are not low on the wildlife encounters here.
I hope we get a chance to come back to Cala Mia someday. If we do we would probably stay a few more nights than we did and go offshore fishing as well as inshore fishing . We would also partake in a snorkel trip again. Thank you to everyone for making our first international trip ( first time out of the USA for both of us ) UNFORGETTABLE.

We had the sense we were in Tamarindo 20 years ago or the travel destination of the year for 2025. Every aspect of our stay exceeded our expectations. Small in size but big in heart and in a sense of family. Feels like most guests are here for fishing or scuba but we were exceptions who just wanted to relax in an environment of natural beauty with fantastic food and a relaxed vibe. Cala Mia provided. From a seamless water transfer to the site to our first meal on the beach we were hooked. We enjoyed inshore fishing, snorkeling, rafting, surfing lessons, wakeboarding, runs and hikes on island trails, kayaking to private beaches and on a guided tour through the mangroves, a cooking class, massages, paddleboarding, swimming, yoga and a lot of reading on the beach or in a hammock or on our deck. Every meal was fantastic meal prepared just for you and the bartender was a treasure who strayed off the menu of drinks without a qualm and then remembered our unique mixes and tastes. The rest of the staff worked hard to accommodate your requests and were all working together as a team. There was no sense of hierarchy or formality such everyone working together to insure a great experience for all. The presence of the canine family of Draco, Amber and Winfield added to the sense of community. We especially enjoyed the surprise birthday dinner in our villa including balloons and a world class meal and chocolate cake to the sound of the surf pounding just outside. All of the equipment from snorkel gear to boats to watersport equipment to furniture was top quality and well maintained. The natural beauty of the archipelago is stunning and the hotel is set on a bluff in between two wonderful beaches giving spectacular views from almost every step or spot. We wondered every day how it was possible that such a beautiful physical environment remained so underdeveloped but were so grateful we were able to enjoy it before it joined the mainstream of vacation destinations. To top it off we felt the package price we enjoyed offered fantastic value. We will definitely return only a question of when!
P.S. Having read the few critical views, in hindsight, the business model here is to invest in high quality staff, food, materials and equipment. Am sure one could find a cheaper fishing charter or surf lesson or dinner if one self-arranged or self-catered but the quality would be lower and it would undercut the holistic experience as well as the ability of the hotel to deliver all of the above to its clients who understand the value of such an experience. read lessTruly Wonderful, Amazing, Stupendous Resort This is the place to relax or go on an adventure. That is how much my family loves this place. The activities are so numerous and fun and there are so many options for all types of people. The owner literally found out where our lost luggage was before the airline!! Service is just top notch. The dogs are not in the least bit intrusive and are all wonderful - you can take one on a hike with you! They have a truly talented craft cocktail artist on staff as well as the cheeriest restaurant and front desk staff. We can't wait to return. read less

The staff is very friendly and ready to serve you with a smile on their faces, they are all very kind. Our special thanks to Bruno and his wife Roxane for receiving us and for always being attentive in case we needed something, Alex the barman, Mitzy from the restaurant and Christian from the boat, thank you for all the attentions with us. They are very special, all of them make you feel as family and friends.
Our bungalow had a beatiful ocean view, you can enjoy the sound of the waves from the room or from the outside sofa. You have wi-fi available in all the hotel. Cala Mia is pet friendly, our cat @tatoelminino was treated like a king, he also enjoyed the walks on the beach and the resort.
There are two beaches at the hotel, very beautiful, one of them has a restaurant, you can do paddle and kayak. The hotel has an infinity pool, you can see the incredible view from there.
We took the horse riding activity, it was amazing, we went by boat to the stables an then you return to the hotel in a two hours ride going through beautiful landscapes from plain to jungle and at the end you reach the beach behind the hotel. We also took the whale watching tour, we had the privilege to see a whale and her whale calf resting in the ocean, it was finishing the whale migration season at the end of September, so we were very lucky.
The food at the restaurant was delicious, it exceeded our expectations. Breakfast is very complete, tasty and varied. They have always specials in the dinner with different options than the regular menu. Bread is exquisite and made fresh every day. Special thanks to the chefs, they know very well how to surprise you with their creations and excellent flavors.

But recently special family were visiting us and we wanted to spend some quality time away with them, but where to go? The suggestion from dear friends to visit Cala Mia Resort was like the telling of a much valued secret. From the moment of engagement with Annie, their contact, the true nature of the rare jewel that is Cala Mia began to unfold. It became clear that anything was possible in terms of things to do from the location - world class sport fishing, SCUBA diving, Whale Watching and such - but also the engagement team and staff on Cala Mia itself create a rare atmosphere which enables any traveller to relax, decompress and enjoy a truly bespoke experience. My son went to a College in the UK which had a motto of ‘counting in ones’, whereby each student is valued specifically for who they are and how they learn. Cala Mia Resort achieves this for the individual resort guest and whatever group they are part of, small (couple), or large (Party). The relaxed easy going approach by David and Annie and the rest of the team belies the true capability and capacity that lies beneath to make anything possible drawing on the wonders within and beyond the shores of Panama.
The people, the food, the drink, the activities are all sublimely satisfying. The saying ‘you get what you pay for’ falls short in the case of Cala Mia. In this wonderful place you get way more than you pay for and get to enjoy an experience that is truly unique; this is something rare in the world of travel today. This is a seven star location run by worldly people who know what people want. But don’t take my word for it, contact them and start a dialogue on what is the art of the possible to match your needs!!

This trip... read moreThank you OLA Women’s Tours for the trip of a lifetime to Panama! You made this so magical and effortless that I could not have asked for more. This trip was completely manifested by my deep need for healing. I started looking online for a retreat that would align with my lifestyle of healthy living and yoga and a few other pieces of criteria; such as LGBT-friendly and most importantly, nature-based (preferably near the ocean).
Meet Be Smythe, owner of OLA Women’s Tours. Be created a brand-new company that specializes in vacations for women (all women, straight, gay, young, old-ish, polka-dotted…) in Panama and soon to be in other countries. Be invited me to teach yoga and attend her retreat called “Soul Journey” set on the private Island, Boca Brava, off the coast of Panama at the luxury resort, Cala Mia (see the reviews for this place).
If you don't know what to expect from Panama, think Costa Rica before the heavy tourism; lush, green and where the rainforest meets the ocean.
This was Be’s promotional tour because it was the maiden voyage of OLA Tours, however from the smoothness of whole trip, you would not know it. A former lawyer, Be is sharp, organized, has an eye for detail, is great with people and a pleasure to know. Be had us doing multiple activities daily including, kayaking, yoga, hiking, swimming, SUP, SUP with Yoga, eating delicious food (prepared to our own personal liking), beach time, hammock naps, sunbathing and so much more.
The trip began with a prompt pick-up from Be's wife and partner, Iliana (who is all smiles and warmth) and after a smooth arrival at the airport, it was then a short ride to the Summit Rainforest Resort in Panama close to the Panama Canal. This property is gorgeous with acres of golf courses and set against a rainforest and butterfly habitat.
The first night we had a leisurely welcome dinner that is prepared by the private chef for OLA Tours. Delicious!
The next morning, we set out for the island. We drove to Boca Chica, approximately 5-6 hours on an air-conditioned luxury coach. With a few pitstops for potty breaks, purchasing of snacks and leg-stretching, the ride was very comfortable. When we arrived at the dock, our luggage was loaded onto the boat for us and we were swept away for a 15-minute boat ride to the Island and the unbelievably beautiful Island and resort called, Cala Mia. We were greeted by the island dogs, staff and taken to our private bungalows. The bungalows (as well as the entire island) is a huge WOW moment.
The private bungalows on Boca Brava (Cala Mia) are magnificent to look at, stay in and decompress at. There are doubles, singles and a couple beach houses for larger groups. I stayed in a private king-size bungalow with a view of the ocean. Each one is air conditioned, beautifully appointed and comfortable with AMAZING views of either the ocean or the bay. They all have private terraces and hammocks, too. How amazing it is to lie in bed (or in the hammock) and hear the birds, howler monkeys and ocean? Even in the glass-enclosed showers, you can hear the island sounds .
Some surprises to me was how well the wifi on the island was (I swear it is better there than at home.) And the water is delicious. The Island and really all of Panama, has clean, drinkable water. The whole resort is run on solar energy and it feels fantastic to be so eco-conscious. After spending time in this beautiful sanctuary of nature which includes monkeys, birds, frogs, whales, dolphins, fish and dogs; it is a great reminder that we share this planet with other living creatures and need to protect her.
The whole island staff is warm, experienced, kind and will go out of their way to make you comfortable. I met the owner David and he is an affable chap with a quick smile and very nice demeanor. Any request is honored.
The island adventure opened with a quick eco-lecture and instructions on how to protect the natural environment we got to live in for a week. After a beautiful meal and optional yoga class, swim or nap, we all got to settle in. The great thing about this place and OLA is that you set your activities, pace, and experience.
A big highlight for me was getting to practice and teach yoga in the open air studio. As both a yogi and a yoga teacher, I felt extremely blessed to be able to connect with my spirit and help others do so in this pristine setting. One night we had a candlelight yoga class that was unforgettable and punctuated by the sound of thunder and backlit by the lightening. Even you are not a yogi, the practice of being mindful here will soothe your soul and take you to a deeper sense of your purpose and how to best walk forward in your life. It always works for me.
I also highly recommend to take advantage of all boat excursions (if you’re a water person like me.) because the staff will guide you to have the safest and most pleasurable time ever. I did SUP for the first time and found it to be thrilling. Also, the fly board is so fun and exhilarating.
Off the restaurant and infinity pool, which overlooks the ocean, is a little bridge that connects to a private spa, where you can get a full-body aromatherapy massage or other beauty services. It is so beautiful with all the floor to ceiling windows open and the sounds of the ocean coming in to soothe you.
I tried to take advantage of everything but really, it is hard to do because there is so much to take in and experience.
The only activities I did not get to do were the life-size chess game and horseback riding because I ran out of time. There is just so much to see and do that I definitely have many reasons to come back.
My favorite thing about Cala Mia, besides the gorgeous beauty of the Island and the warm staff who waits on you hand and foot, is the little family of dogs/chocolate labs that live there: Amber, Draco and son, Winfield. To see them run free and swim when they want, get pets when they want and play constantly was so joyous to witness. A great reminder to play more and think less.
Walking around in Panama, whether on the island or on land, the air is full of the sounds of nature. I realized that even if my intention of healing wasn't my primary focus, it is so pristine here that this place works it’s magic on you whether you ask for it or not. I felt a deep sense of happiness and relaxation there. And a lot of that is the dynamic that Be creates when she structured her retreat. She has the uncanny insight to put the right people together on the trip and also as room mates on the island. I promise you that Be is a trustworthy guide that you can rely on to help you create the experience you want to have.
I know I left a little piece of my heart there (and also some things that did not serve me). I am leaving a better person for sure.
Any time in nature is spiritual and to be such an integral part of it through the ocean, island and yoga activities was immensely powerful. And to have it set up with such an organized schedule (as Be says with her mish-mash Aussie/English accent: s’hedule) takes the pressure off so I was able to just show up and enjoy!

I wanted to make sure the owners hear our feedback, especially about the staff. They made the entire difference especially since we’re alone in a foreign country. Not so good with names but the receptionist, the server Alex, and chef Garay were terrific.
They ALWAYS had a smile on their face. They always tried to go the extra mile and were eager to always go the extra mile, especially the chef Garay who made us custom dishes not on the menu and made us pizza upon request when the beach bar was closed.
Also, food was amazing. I think it was the second best part of our stay after the beautiful view.

For us this was a return to Boca Brava, after 20 yrs & as penny pinching backpackers- Cala Mia, is for those not on a tight budget per se, is a treat & more boutique rustic. The location, grounds, & cabins are beautiful & confortable. Cabins are modern rustic, are well ventilated & have a/c & fans, a great view & are clean. The island felt relatively bug free. We slept three in one of the “2/3 person” cabins, & it was not cramped, though would recommend simply putting the extra mattress on the floor & forgo the squeaky cot itself. Lazing about in the infinity pool with that view-like out of a James Bond movie-is absolutely lovely, & was often social/happy hour at the end of days. The staff are engaged & help make the place personable, as does the owner. We had planned the trip knowing our daughter would connect with their dogs, & Draco became part of the family & a good guide dog on a hike to find Howler monkeys. The snorkeling trip was particularly memorable given close up sighting of Humpback Whales was a byproduct of the trip, & our guide went in the water with us. That said, snorkeling in these parts is typically good, not great, which was ok by us.

Such a beautiful place to have breakfast overlooking the water. We stayed in the beach villa and loved it - 6 beds, very nice bathrooms and a great outdoor living space (the villa is very new). The sheets and bed were more comfortable than mine at home. We took full advantage of all the activities at the resort. We were lucky to have a relatively calm day at sea for snorkeling with Fred and Samwell and saw a TON of fish and colorful coral as well as dolphins and flying fish. We had lunch at a secluded beach (where Survivor had been filmed) which was so beautiful. We took the paddle boards out every day (sunrise and sunset). The howler monkeys start howling at 5:45 but aren't too close but it adds to the atmosphere - we did see a tree full of them at the far side of the beach one evening. Tons of birds, toads, only one snake, and one GIANT iguana. Ask David where the iguanas hang out. Our boys played with the giant chess set every day. Loved the selection of games - check out "Pick your poison." David was so helpful with every aspect of our stay and can custom your day-trips for your family. We did a second half-day trip to another couple of islands and our boys got to knee-board. The kids loved the pool and I would also highly recommend the guided kayak mangrove tour with Samwell. We flew from Panama City to David (35 min flight) then drove 75 minutes to Boca Chica (with driver arranged by resort) and then 20 min boat ride to Cala Mia. Not the easiest place to get to but we loved it. The sand is not white like I hear the Atlantic side of Panama is but beautiful nonetheless. No snorkeling right off shore. No yoga currently. Fantastic resort!! Great for couples, families, relaxation or lots of activity - great for whatever you need. read less

This is a small resort (24 people max) but has so many things to do. The fishing is this area is world class. My son and I went out deep sea fishing on the 32’ blackfin boat one day and pulled in 5 Yellowfin Tuna each weighing between 70-110 pounds each. The boat was great and the captain and first mate did everything for us(including filleting the tuna which we ate that night for dinner), While we went fishing, my wife and daughter went horseback riding around the island and saw howler monkeys, local farms, and great scenery. The next day we all went snorkeling but the highlight was seeing a mother and baby humpback whale while on the boat. Next day three of us went SCUBA diving which was great - lots of sharks, turtles, rays (and dolphins on the ride out). Another day we went to Boquete(up in the mountains) and went to a coffee plantation which was fascinating to learn about growing and roasting beans. Food at the resort was always superb. David, the owner of the resort, really goes out of his way to make sure you can do whatever you want. This was a great family vacation! Highly recommend Cala Mia! read less

Go back to the city and stay at Brand "X." Thankfully, there were no TV's during our 3-day stay at Cala Mia, but we wanted for nothing.
For your discerning perspective, we are both active, able-bodied, fifty-somethings, who have sailed & traveled extensively in the Caribbean. We consider ourselves "foodies," and prefer being far from the things of man.
A short boat ride from the town of Boca Chica, you are transported into a remote, unspoiled, natural wilderness, where howler monkeys can be heard from your bungalow as you watch dolphins frolicking while seated in your swing seat on your private porch overlooking the "ensenada" (cove). Bungalows have sufficient privacy and we spent long intervals on our porch soaking in nature's beauty.
Plenty of activities are available depending on your interest level. Sportfishing & snorkeling tours are popular, but we chose kayaking, SUPing and hiking. A beautiful and easy kayak trip lies up the mangrove river immediately to the west of "west beach" on the resort. We paddled about a mile-and-a-half up river where the mangrove canopy envelopes the river and you feel like you're in a nature documentary. A truly unique ecosystem and "Levy," the bartender, had cold drinks waiting for us as we beached our kayaks back at the resort after a couple hours on the water.
A ten minute hike into the forest from the resort along a trail found us face-to-face with troupes of howler monkeys. We even watched a mother nursing what appeared to be a new-born monkey in a Carob tree only a few feet above our heads. We spotted many unique bird species darting in & out of the trees. I was glad I brought my binoculars!
Often, one trades-away culinary expectations when staying in such a remote location, but we were very pleasantly surprised by the gastronomy practiced by Chef Eduardo. Each night, at least two dinner options were available, and we always ordered one of each to share. Whether it was filet mignon, fresh fish or chicken cordon bleu, we were very pleased with the quality and presentation. We were pleasantly greeted each time we entered the dining area by our server, "Roni". She and her sister "Zelal", are recently imported from Turkey by older sister, Jana, who runs the resort with her boyfriend, David. We were always made to feel warm & welcomed by the "family." We were truly sorry to have to leave such a friendly staff.
We took advantage of full body massages by "Gladys," in the adjacent rock island spa connected by a charming rope bridge. This resort just oozes romance for couples, so I'd recommend using that to your full advantage.
We stayed here as part of an investigatory 10-day trip to determine if Panama is right for us in retirement. The Boca Chica area reminded us of what the BVI's must have been like in the 1960's, before those resorts became household names. All six members of my family - two grandparents, two parents, and two teenagers - LOVED every second we spent at Cala Mia. David, the owner, made us feel like invited guests at his house. Queenie patiently and warmly took care of us and planned all of our amazing adventures. John at the Beach Bar was so friendly and made amazing drinks for us. All of the guides and boat captains were incredible as well (Olivar, Carlos, Samuel) and Roni and her sister took great care of us at every meal.
We took advantage of all that Cala Mia offers. We went horse back riding up to the viewpoints and across the island. We hiked across the island, seeing some amazing birds and monkeys, swimming on a beautiful beach at the end of hike and getting picked up by boat. My husband and teenage son went fishing for an afternoon and caught mackerel that the chef made into ceviche and sashimi for us for dinner - incredible! All 6 of us went snorkeling for a day - and with Samuel's help saw lots of incredible fish, spiny lobster, a shark and a puffer fish - and then had lunch on a beach that we swam to from our boat. We also spent a wonderful day just reading in the hammocks on the beach, playing cards, and swimming.
Cala Mia is the perfect blend of things - great accommodations and lots to do but in a peaceful atmosphere in beautiful setting away from the crowds. We are all just waiting until we can plan our next trip back.

This resort has plenty of modern amenities and outstanding, personalized customer service, but its intimate size and coexistence with Boca Brava's lush scenery that made Cala Mia an instant hit with our two-family, three-generation, 10-person group over the Christmas holiday. We took four casitas, which are simply yet comfortably appointed, each facing the ocean or bay, and immediately fell into an easy rhythm that it was hard to leave four days later. The days started with a made-to-order breakfast with fresh fruit at the large, open-air dining room, then segued into fishing, snorkeling, or kayaking. After a box lunch (on the boat) or pizza (from the brick oven at the beach bar), the afternoons were tailor-made for swimming in the bathtub-warm bay, reading under a palm (watch for falling coconuts), or snoozing in one of the hammocks at the beach or on the porch of our casitas. By dinner, temps were cool enough to enjoy a few mojitos on the dining deck before digging into well-earned hearty meals (typically two choices for appetizer, entree, and dessert, though special requests were happily accommodated).
In terms of activities, the fishing was our highlight. We went out twice, once for marlin and once for roosters. Both trips were successful, with my wife catching her first blue marlin (a 300-pound fighter) and the kids and dads catching a variety of bonita, snapper, mackerel, jack, and more. Carlitos, the resort's captain, is an excellent guide, and Cala Mia's location is perfect for getting to prime waters quickly. Both days were capped with wonderful surprises from the chef, who used our catches to prepare a beautiful whole roasted snapper one night and perhaps the best ceviches we've ever eaten the next.
The snorkeling isn't the best in the world but is worth doing - and is great for kids and grandmas thanks to calm waters in protected bays and no wicked currents to deal with. And definitely take the sit-on-top kayaks out for a spin into the mangroves at high tide; our group saw and heard manta rays, monkeys, and numerous tropical birds.
What ultimately makes Cala Mia a great value is that all of these options and all of the relaxation come with a super-friendly and helpful staff. The owner, David, is a friendly New Zealander who's hands-on all day and joined us for drinks at dinnertime. We're already talking about our next trip. read lessWill exceed all your expectations!!! First off, the resort staff and owner were very communicative from the beginning. They responded to our inquiry quickly and helped book us into the best room situation for what we wanted since we needed 2 bungalows. They worked to put together the best options for our activities, etc. They really are great at working with guests to make sure they are meeting your needs.
The resort is impeccably maintained - the grounds, the buildings, the boats and equipment are not only clean and in excellent condition, but the resort has been designed in harmony with the surroundings. The beds are very comfortable, showers are great, and the bungalows have a roomy outdoor seating area with a beautiful view, not to mention the soundtrack of waves, howler monkeys and birds. Truly an island paradise.
Every meal we had was outstanding, some of the best meals we have had in Panama. The staff and the owner provided top-notch service. They were all extremely attentive to our needs without being intrusive. We appreciated that they send an email asking for food preferences and allergies in advance as people in our party have some and it can be a source of stress when traveling. Knowing that info was already on file with the resort, and they cared enough to ask in advance, was a relief and demonstrated to us their commitment to their clients.
The resort helped us book an inshore fishing trip which was an excellent day on the water. We just wanted something casual and we had fun plus the bonus of seeing whales and dolphins. They also set us up with massages from Cristian and he is truly one of the best. The Cala Mia staff also helped us pull together a small birthday celebration for our family member and the extra attention made it a day to remember for her.
We really appreciated how well they took care of us, it was a fantastic trip we will never forget. Also it's a great place to go relax and take your family or couple. There are different activities like horseback riding, hiking in the jungle, bird watching, water activities, massages, pool, a bar with amazing cocktails and a restaurant with superb food.
The villas are very clean and spacious, have large comfortable beds and terraces overlooking the pacific ocean with hamacs to enjoy the hundred of different birds species and animals like howler monkeys that come to greet you every morning.

Truly a jewel to find. The bartenders did so many things there it was incredible. Thye mix excellent and creative drinks and they and the grandsons soon became buddies, both Carlos and Michael . Annie, handled our booking, greeted us at the boak, checked us in and was always around to see if everything was grooving for us. She is incredible and indispensable. The gracious owner David went out of his way to come greet everyone of us and was kind enough to compensate us for some mild construction noise we experienced near our unit. He was great ! We are not 4 seasons level of travelers, that is artificial and way overpriced for what distills as snobbery ... but this is our 4 seasons level for us. The feeling was like being on 'Fantasy Island' from the TV series. It takes some effort to get there but is part of the fun and adventure and worth every minute of it. PArking at the Boca Chica church was safe and inexpensive, the abigo family there were very nice. Overall, everything was priced right for the package we did. Very few places if any have made me think about quitting my semi-retirement but this place and the possibility of working with David - rang that bell loudly. read less

My family enjoyed it so much we changed our plan to do three days at two resorts, and stayed for all six days ( we actually checked out, went to the other resort, and collectively regretting having left Cala Mia, contacted David to arrange returning for the additional three days of our vacation. Offshore fishing was amazing. We targeted tuna, and live baiting yellow fins on spinning gear is a tremendous experience. Plus, while fishing we saw a whale, dolphins and lots of turtles. Capt Chi-Chi and his mates were wonderful.

The people serving us at all times made you feel comfortable and very welcomed always greeting us with a huge smile and hugs as we departed. The owner is great, he is so relaxed but very helpful and personal, we loved him. Aura, the women who sets everything up did an incredible job setting up the most wonderful trip for us. She gets you anything and everything you need and want and is incredibly sweet.
When we arrived at Cala Mia we were greeted with fresh juice and men to carry our things. Our room was better than we ever expected and the food was outstanding, they are very flexible with how much you want to eat and what you want. For example my dad and I couldn't finish bread, an appetizer, a main dish, and dessert on our own so we were able to split how we liked. Also if you prefer a salad over the appetizer they are very happy to accommodate but again the most delicious food.
The activities available were very fun and very easy to arrange once you are there. The snorkeling day trip was incredible. After a couple sessions of snorkeling (seeing some of the biggest, coolest fish we’ve ever seen) the guides take you to a remote island with no one else there. The island has white sand and completely clear water. They brought a table and chairs and made us a delicious lunch, they also climbed a tree and cut us fresh coconuts to drink- truly something out of a movie. Thats just one example of the many activities offered at Cala Mia.

It had the amenities of home (AC/Wifi) with the island feel. Our main attraction to the location was the bungalow. We stayed a week in the Hydra Bungalow and were very pleased with our decision to visit this remote island resort. If you're looking for a peaceful get away, this is your place. We visited in June - what they consider winter, the weather was in the mid to upper 80's, perfect for us coming from the mid-west United States. There was also plenty to do. We chose to go swimming in the infinity pool with loco coco drinks served poolside in coconuts cut fresh that morning, hiked on the island and saw the howling monkeys, took a kayak out, and scheduled a boating trip to troll fish on the way to another uninhabited small island with a beach. This is where my fiance proposed to me in the ocean off the shore! Very romantic atmosphere with attentive staff to care for your every need.
We were concerned that there would be mosquito's but didn't find this to be a problem. We did however encounter one evening with small biting bugs, the staff was well equipped with bug spray if needed. There were several small lizards (?) but we are used to camping and found that these little creatures added to the island experience.
The meals were served at given times but flexible if needed and you place your order early in the day so your food is ready for you when you arrive in the dining area or ask for it to be delivered to your room. Our outside patio had plenty of seating with a view of the ocean, a nice place to enjoy dining. We were pleased with the menu selection since I enjoy seafood and my fiance would rather have meat.
