Panama Jungle, Stay Safe While Hiking Solo

Panama Jungle Hiking Solo

Hiking in Panama offers so many options to choose from, mostly off the beaten path. Unlike other countries, most trails are not clearly marked and national parks have few park rangers. So, it is recommended to always go with a guide, no matter how experienced you are as a hiker. There are a few exceptions where you can go on your own, but keep this in mind as a general rule.

The Central Mountain Range has two sections along the isthmus. Talamanca Mountain Range starts in Costa Rica continuing until the west side of Panama. It covers parts of the provinces of Bocas del Toro and Chiriqui, as well some of the Ngäbe-Buglé indigenous territory. The second part, which is not as high, is called the Tabasará Mountain Range. This is located in the provinces of Veraguas and Cocle, including the east part of the Ngäbe-Buglé comarca.

The highest places for hiking in Panama are located within this mountain range, including the Baru Volcano with 3,475 meters making it the highest point. At 3,335 meters, Cerro Fabrega is the second highest and is part of La Amistad International Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared by Panama and Costa Rica. As you can imagine, many of Panama’s most important rivers also start in this area, including Chiriquí Viejo, San Félix, and Tabasará. Some of Panama’s prettiest waterfalls can be found in this area.

You can go on long mile hiking adventures, preferably with company. Also, you can go day hiking alone in certain trails in the Panama jungle, but make sure you get prepared.
